Our first day of official convention business was packed! We successfully defended our resolution’s inclusion in the convention proceedings, despite condescension, racism, and harassment of our members. We expect Resolution 46 to be brought to the floor for discussion and voting either today or tomorrow, along with AFSCME leadership’s weak and insufficient resolution from March, Resolution 32.
We’re kicking off today’s proceedings with a quote from Robin, member of AFSCME Local 88, Council 75. Local 88 is another one of the locals who have officially endorsed our resolution. Here’s what Robin has to say about why she supports Resolution 46:
“The struggles for workers’ rights and human rights cannot be separated. Labor unions are at their best when they engage in the work to fight for both!
Historically, AFSCME has proven that it is willing to do that work: in the fight for civil rights for Black workers/all Black People in the U.S. during 1960s, and against apartheid in South Africa during the 1980s – 90s.
