[The following statement was adopted at the ALAA-UAW 2325 Joint Council of May 7, 2024 by a vote of 150-9-4]

Resolution on the UAW International Executive Board’s Failure to Divest from Genocide

Whereas, on May 3, 2024, a majority of UAW International Executive Board members, including President Shawn Fain, did not vote to divest from Israel Bonds, or take any other steps to end UAW complicity, despite President Fain expressing UAW’s support for student protestors and their cause only two days earlier

Whereas, student protestors, including UAW members, are specifically calling for institutions in which they are a part of to divest from Israeli apartheid and genocide;

Whereas, on December 1, 2023, the UAW International Executive Board (IEB) voted to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the creation of a UAW Divestment and Just Transition working group;

Whereas, ALAA passed a Resolution on Divestment from Israel Bonds and on Transparency in Investments funded through Union Membership Dues on July 22, 2022, and a Resolution Calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza, an End to the Israeli Occupation of Palestine, and Support for Workers’ Political Speech on December 19, 2023, both calling on the UAW to divest from Israel bonds and US-backed Israeli occupation and genocide;

Therefore be it resolved that:

  • ALAA commends UAW Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla for calling the vote and voting yes to end UAW’s complicity in genocide.
  • ALAA condemns President Shawn Fain and all other IEB members who declined to vote yes, and as a result, continue the UAW’s complicity in genocide.
  • ALAA directs all Local 2325 Community Action Program (CAP) representatives to bring resolutions to their CAP Councils demanding that the IEB vote to divest immediately from Israel bonds.
  • ALAA calls on other UAW locals to pass similar resolutions.
