San Antonio Alliance Resolution for An Arms Embargo, October 6, 2025
Whereas the Israeli military has directly killed over 66,000 people in Gaza including over 13,000 children, and may have indirectly killed over 100,000 people through its blockades on food aid and its systematic destruction of Gazan medical facilities and water and sanitation infrastructure. And
Whereas the International Association of Genocide Scholars affirmed in September 2025 that the Israeli military is carrying out a genocide in Gaza, reporting that “Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide in article II of the United Nations convention for the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide (1948).” And
Whereas the American Historical Association has condemned what it describes as “scholasticide” in Gaza – the deliberate and systematic destruction of Gaza’s educational system. And
Whereas the Palestinian Ministry of Education reports that as of early September 2025, 972 teachers and administrators had been killed in both Gaza and the West Bank since October 2023, and at least 4,538 injured. And
Whereas, the U.S. spent at least $22 billion supporting Israel’s military operations in the first year of the genocide alone, while working Americans continue to suffer from a lack of healthcare, affordable housing, and social services. And
Whereas union-endorsed San Antonio Congressional Representatives Joaquin Castro and Greg Casar have signed-on to the Congressional Block the Bombs Bill which seeks to block arms exports and military aid to Israel. And
Whereas the National Education Association, alongside national and local unions representing over 12 million American workers has called for an end to military aid to Israel while it carries out its genocide against the Palestinian people. And
Whereas a large and growing majority of the American public opposes continuing U.S. military support for Israel. And
Whereas working Americans are endangered by the unnecessary transport of arms, ammunition, and explosives to foreign militaries, and a recent shipment of more than a dozen tons of nitrocellulose to Israel from JFK Airport had catastrophic potential to injure thousands. And
Whereas the company Maersk, the logistics company that has shipped the most military cargo by sea to Israel, is also attacking worker’s rights at home. And
Whereas unions in Palestine and professional associations have called on unions worldwide to “Stop Arming Israel,” and workers and their unions around the world, such as in Italy, Belgium, France, Greece, Morocco, Spain, and Sweden, have responded to the call.
Therefore, be it resolved that:
Our union calls for an immediate arms embargo on Israel and will support a future arms embargo on any country that is committing war crimes.
Our union supports a broader local campaign to prevent our airports, seaports, and any other public resources being used for the shipment of arms to Israel and any country that is committing war crimes.
Our union stands for investment of money currently being spent on foreign military aid towards serving the needs of working people at home.
Our union stands for the rights of people everywhere to live free lives regardless of their immigration status, ethnicity, race, or sexual orientation.
Our union stands for peace, international cooperation, and the safety of working people around the world.
