Palestine is a Labor Issue
Peter’s testimony at the UC People’s Tribunal for Palestine includes an analysis of the connection between the labor movement and the movement for a Free Palestine.
******************************************************************************
Some Highlights:
So these examples show that that the UC has become much more brazen in repressing strikes
and they also show that the repression of the anti genocide protests is a worker issue because the same repressive forces that are being used against the protests, the same Mccarthyite witch hunts
against college students and faculty members, are being used against workers.
At the same time that the federal government is deporting antigenocide international students,
they’re also rounding up immigrant union organizers UFW workers for example, and the same forces waging imperialist war abroad and supporting the genocide in Gaza are overturning democratic rights and preparing massive repression at home, including against the labor movement and there’s no doubt that they will target labor leaders for arrest.
******************************************************************************
They say that we need to stick to bread-and-butter issues, well this is a bread-and-butter issue,
for one thing, because the money being spent on policing, the money being spent on policing and imperialist war is money that could be spent on jobs, education, and living wages.
And what’s more, the entire labor movement is going to be targeted, and is already being targeted, so we need to talk about these threats to our unions, we need to have an open discussion
and politically educate our members, and we need to return to a strong position on Palestine.
In short, we need to bring back internationalism to our unions, and we need to remember
an old slogan of the workers movement, “An injury to one is an injury to all!”
