Labor Stands with Hiab Teshome, President of GEO-AFT Local 3550

An Open Letter from Michigan Labor Unions and Local Organizations

We, the undersigned workers, labor unions, and local organizations, stand in solidarity with Hiab Teshome, the elected president of the Graduate Employees Organization Local 3550 of the American Federation of Teachers (GEO-AFT Local 3550), who is facing trumped up felony charges for embezzlement and false pretenses during GEO’s ongoing contract negotiations.

We understand these felony charges proposed by the University of Michigan’s Police Department and pursued by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit to be entirely baseless and politically motivated. The complaint issuance date of the charges came one day after the joint FBI, state, and local police raids and arrests of seven pro-Palestine activists. A total of eight students and workers are now facing spurious charges of Conspiracy to Transmit a Threat, Conspiracy to Tamper with a Witness, and Destruction of Property to Prevent Seizure. The federal government’s baseless charges against Palestine solidarity activists has further emboldened the University of Michigan Police Department, Sergeant Ryan Cavanaugh, and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit. We understand the collaboration between federal, local, and university bodies to be the latest example of a long line of attempts by the University to persecute its workers and those in solidarity with Palestine, this time through the targeting of a union president. Despite the persecution of Palestine solidarity activists, we renew our commitment to the liberation of the Palestinian people who continue to face immense forms of violence while the University of Michigan maintains material investments through its endowment in companies complicit in Israel’s genocide.

The allegation of embezzlement and false pretenses relate to Hiab’s participation in an University of Michigan Medical School student organization where she was a co-signer for the group’s finances but not otherwise involved in its activities. The University has never contacted Hiab regarding this alleged misconduct nor pursued its typical institutional processes for allegations of misuse of student organization funds. It is thus unprecedented and highly unusual for such an issue to be immediately escalated to felony charges.

We will not sit by idly as the University of Michigan, its police department, and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, target a respected, valued, and beloved member of the broader labor community. An injury to one is an injury to all, and we understand that an attack such as this against the president of a local union is an attack against all of us.

By pursuing these charges, Eli Savit is acting in concert with the Trump administration’s ongoing effort to repress local activism, freedom of speech, and labor more broadly. We collectively demand Eli Savit, who is running as the Democratic candidate for Michigan Attorney General, to live up to his slogan (“A Fighter for Justice”) and immediately drop any and all charges against Hiab Teshome. Anything less than that proves that Eli Savit does not fight for justice.

  64. Spencer Cook, University of Michigan
  65. Ryan McCarty, Lecturer, University of Michigan Ann Arbor Campus. I am signing this in protest of the University’s clear attacks on labor and pro-Palestinian activism. These charges have contravened all the University’s own policies and procedures in order to attack a political opponent.
  66. Mubarak Ahmad, School of Public Health, GEO. I am a graduate worker and member of the University of Michigan community. I am writing to express concern regarding the charges brought against Hiab Teshome, the elected president of the Graduate Employees Organization and a respected member of our community.  Based on my experience within our community, Hiab has consistently served as a dedicated advocate for graduate workers and has supported many students during challenging periods. For this reason, the nature and escalation of these allegations have generated concern among members of our community.  I respectfully ask that this matter be handled with fairness and careful consideration, and that any actions taken do not contribute to a climate of fear or discourage civic engagement, advocacy, or labor participation among active community members.

  79. Emily Slobodenyuk, GEO, UM Medical School. Hiab is a dedicated scholar and advocate. She has been elected as the president of our graduate union, and has worked hard to improve her community. These charges are clearly meant to target a critical organizer to dissuade others. We all stand with Hiab!
  80. Dominique Fahmy, University of Michigan. The charges against Hiab are completely unfounded and an attempt to harass and silence nonviolent protestors. We will not stand by while this institution continues to serve as an instrument of fascism.

  83. Tomi Lawal, University of Michigan Medical School. Because I’ve known Hiab since we matriculated together and I know her character. These accusations levied against her are false and baseless. It is clearly an intimidation factor being peddled as a way of trying to silence her and the broader student activist community. 114. Kennedi Scott, University of Michigan

  116. Daniel Akouri, YCEA. In solidarity against weaponzing the law to prevent free speech
  117. Nick Geiser, UM Physics Postdoc, UM-PRO Bargaining Team. It is unacceptable for UM DPSS to bring frivolous felony charges against a union president during negotiations. Such harassment violates the Regents’ union neutrality agreement and cannot be tolerated.
  118. Louis Kaplan, alumnus. the misuse of power from Eli Savit is egregious. This is a shady way of coming after someone who simply advocates for the rights of Palestinian lives, which is completely legal free speech.

  146. Phil Christman, LEO, Lecturer II, English. I know negotiating with unions is inconvenient, but railroading your own students is probably not good for business. (There are other reasons not to do it, but those only count with people who have consciences.)

  151. Sophie Maloney, University of Michigan medical school
  152. Marta Struve, GEO Vice President, Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD worker. Hiab has exemplary character and is deeply appreciated by the Ann Arbor and UM community. This attack on a labor, Palestine, and anti-ICE lead organizer is an atrocious attempt to win the favors of the state. I consider these charges as just another attack in U-M’s repression campaign against workers and students calling for divestment.

  154. Andy Brosius, U of M. I oppose the ridiculous political charges against Hiab!

  158. Anja Sheppard, Department of Robotics. it is extremely obvious that the university is using baseless claims to harass an active member of the graduate union and pro-palestine organizing. this is despicable.
  159. Alexander Hsu, University of Michigan. Universities are meant to stand for two groups of people: the faculty and the students. The past few years at Michigan have demonstrated a prioritization of the bureaucracy and the national government.

  234. Leslie Vernon-Dunnigan, Psychology and Women and Gender Studies, UMich. Our employers are not entitled to our loyalty in our personal lives. We work for them, they don’t own us. What Hiab was doing was excersing their rights in their private life and has nothing to do with their employment. The University’s choice is an attempt to intimidate the union
  235. Manar Talab, University of Michigan. The persecution of pro-Palestinian activist through the justice system is a sign of rising facism and authoritarianism in our country.

  242. Neil MacLachlan, University of Michigan
  243. Zahraa Zamir, University of Michigan
  244. Ian McCue, University of Michigan. Oppression is often disguised through coincidence to obscure motive. This is clearly related to ongoing contract negotiations as a tool to undermine the authority of the union, and increase bargaining power for a University who has made clear it’s intent to protect the interests of the purse. I will not stand idly by while Reagents, Deans, and Administrators cower to the authoritative whims of the current political climate in order to protect their monetary interests.
  245. Victoria Cheung, University of Michigan, School of Public Health

  250. Andrew Ruba, University of Michigan, College of Engineering
  251. Claire Mellott, University of Michigan

  253. Eleanor Plaster, University of Michigan
  254. Kathleen Brown, GEO Member. The University has systematically gone after anti-genocide students, workers, and community members who have dared to speak out against U-M investments that support genocide and apartheid. Savit, you have the power to reject this criminalization. Do the right thing and drop these pretextual charges.

  283. AJ cho, n/a
  284. Ellen Yeats, School of Engineering
  285. Gabriel Jimenez, University of Michigan Law School Alum (2026). This unprecedented support of criminal charges for alleged conduct that should have been addressed by normal institutional channels is more evidence of UM’s attempt to retaliate against labor and pro-Palestine organizers. I sign to reject that behavior!
  286. Kristina Bee, University of Michigan, student life staff. There is absolutely no way that Hiab did anything close to what these charges are.
  287. Dana Chen, University of Michigan Law School. I stand with Hiab. UM’s attack on organized labor and students’ free speech and due process rights is shameful. Solidarity forever!
  288. Jared Eno, University of Michigan, Ford/LSA. I have no idea why Eli Savit wants to be a tool of UMPD Sergeant Ryan Cavanaugh’s crusade against Palestine solidarity and labor, but whatever he thinks he’s getting out of destroying a beloved member of our community, he is making a huge mistake.
  289. Melanie Goulish, Michigan State University
  290. Ash Wilkin, UMMAP
  291. Arianna Stokes, UM Graham Institute. Shame on Eli Savit. Shame on the University of Michigan
  292. Zena Aljilehawi, University of Michigan-LSA. I am signing in support of Hiab against these baseless politically motivated charges in attempt to silence Labor efforts. We will not be silenced.
  293. Crystal Cole, Alumna, University of Michigan
  294. Ilakkiya Venkatachalam, Department of Human Genetics. Attempts to intimidate student organizers must be strongly opposed.
  295. Leta Ashebo, University of Michigan Medical School
  296. Joey Valle, GEO and UM Engineering PhD Alum. The bogus charges against Hiab are another shamefully brazen attempt by UM to intimidate and disrupt labor and pro-Palestinian organizing on and around campus.
