As the largest flotilla in history set sail from the Port of Barcelona this week, carrying food, baby formula, and medicine to the besieged Gaza Strip, port workers in Italy promised to “shut down all of Europe” if communication is lost with the flotilla crew members.

Speaking on behalf of the Union Sindacale di Base (USB), a collective of Italian unions, a dockworker at the Port of Genoa made explicit the demands of the working class global majority that stands with Gaza, and the power wielded by these masses: “If we lose contact with our boats, with our comrades—even for just 20 minutes—we will shut down all of Europe.”

The ports of Europe are stopping points for military cargo and weapons components headed from the United States to Israel. “13,000 to 14,000 containers leave this region every year for Israel,” the dockworker said to the crowd. Should the flotilla be prevented from reaching Gaza, “not a single nail will leave anymore.”

“Our young women and men must come back without a scratch, and all of this cargo, which belongs to the people and is going to the people, must reach its destination, down to the very last box.”
