The SDICLC Calls for Recognition of Genocide in Gaza, Condemns the Abduction and Assault of Chris Smalls, and Demands an End to U.S. Weapons Transfers to Israel

On August 27, 2025, the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO (SDICLC), passed a historic resolution: “The SDICLC Calls for Recognition of Genocide in Gaza, Condemns the Abduction and Assault of Chris Smalls, and Demands an End to U.S. Weapons Transfers to Israel”.

Solidarity is the core of our movement—it means standing for others’ freedom even when it is difficult, because our own liberation is bound together. When we remain silent in the face of injustice—whether it’s ICE targeting workers in San Diego and Imperial Valley or Israel’s genocide in Gaza—we betray our fundamental principle: AN INJURY TO ONE, IS AN INJURY TO ALL.

Thank you to the union members and community advocates of all backgrounds who researched and shared their lived experiences to build and pass this resolution.

This resolution:

• Recognizes Israel’s violence in Gaza as genocide by legal definitions and assessments

• Condemn Israel’s illegal abduction and racialized assault of union leader Chris Smalls @chris.smalls_

• Reaffirms that an attack on workers and their organizers anywhere is an attack on the union / labor movement everywhere

• Names Israel an apartheid state

• Demands an end to all U.S. weapons and funding until Israel complies with international law and restores full humanitarian aid access

• Supports congressional efforts to halt weapons transfers—and expresses disappointment of CA U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff for refusing to act

True solidarity means speaking truth to power, not looking away.
