Defend UAWD on April 27!

Overview

In late March, we were shocked to learn of a proposal by a majority of the UAWD Steering Committee to fully dissolve the caucus. As you might recall, after a close election this past fall, the more conservative “Strong” slate won control of the UAWD Steering Committee. They’ve now made their intentions clear: to run the caucus into the ground, which would by default restore UAW to a one-party union under corrupt Admin Caucus rule.

UAWD has been an important vehicle to advance demands for direct democracy, transparency, rank-and-file power, and support for Palestinian solidarity. On April 27, we plan to turn out in significant numbers to defend UAWD! Below, you’ll find information about how to register for the April 27 call. In addition, please check out some talking points to share on stack or type in the chat about why it’s critical to defend UAWD. Tell your friends it’s time to defend rank-and-file union democracy!

Talking Points

  • The Strong Slate argues that UAWD is overly represented by academic workers. However, this false frame silences the nearly 50% of caucus members who work in other sectors, including manufacturing, libraries, and healthcare. The persistent erasure of these workers’ voices must stop!
  • The Strong Slate’s argument that academic workers don’t have a place in UAWD is also harmful. As the state is literally kidnapping and disappearing union members in this sector for their commitment to international solidarity with the people of Palestine, UAWD should be defending these workers!
  • We need a vehicle that continues to challenge UAW leadership, especially when the IEB takes terrible positions like imposing international tariffs that break transnational solidarity with UAW workers in Mexico and elsewhere and increase the cost of living in the U.S. We need a caucus that challenges these conciliatory and dangerous positions.
  • Without UAWD, UAW will return to a corrupt one-party union. The last time the union was under Admin Caucus leadership, the UAW IEB was under FBI investigation for internal corruption and money laundering, resulting in more than a dozen UAW electeds serving jail time. UAWD emerged from this mess as an antidote to UAW corruption. The UAW needs a reform caucus to continue advancing transparency, democracy, and anti-corruption measures in the union.
  • As the U.S. descends into fascist rule, now is when we most need an active reform caucus. Now is the time for UAWD to build deep alliances with UAW workers across sectors towards our shared stake in advancing protections and justice for the working class.
